How to prepare your workspace for Gen Z [Infographic]
We’ll see Gen Z’s influence and workforce participation steadily grow over the next two decades. Here’s what you need to know about getting your workplace ready to attract and retain the next generation of talented employees.
Who are Gen Z?
Gen Z might just be getting started in the workplace, but they’re a highly skilled group that’s quickly growing in influence. They are considered to be those born between 1995 - 2010, making them aged between 9 and 24.
How are Gen Z different than previous generations?
Gen Z are in many ways like Gen Y or Millennials. But as true digital natives growing up in the 21st century, the way they think and act is different from previous generations.
Independent: They think for themselves
Educated: Their education never stops, with a strong focus on self-education and continuous learning
Tech-integrated: Technology is just part of life; they’ve never known a time before broadband internet and mobile devices
Inclusive: They’re more diverse and more inclusive of others
Flexible: They want greater freedom and flexibility, even when it comes to their own identity
Natural multitaskers Switching between tasks is second nature
Immaterial: They want access and experiences more than possessions
Practical: They know “life’s not fair” and expect to put in the work in order to succeed
With such unique characteristics, it’s no wonder Gen Z employees are already highly sought after in many workplaces.
How to attract and retain Gen Z employees
Gen Z have very different ideas, values, and expectations in the workplace to previous generations. If you want to attract the next generation of skilled workers (and retain them), here are some changes your workplace may need to embrace:
Create dynamic workspaces
The most successful work environments offer a range of spaces, allowing employees to choose a location that suits what they’re working on. Smart lighting-enabled workplaces seamlessly adapt as employees move from one space to another.
Provide tech that offers instant gratification
Don’t make them wait any longer than necessary. Gen Z have grown up with access to Google search, fast internet speeds, mobile apps, and streaming. They expect to have the tools and information they need at their fingertips. So, invest in fast technology and systems that minimise friction and speed up your processes. When you install smart technology (such as intelligent lighting) ensure it’s able to be upgraded wirelessly on-site to enable future benefits and features as they become realised (such as beacons or wayfinding). Delivering additional value for your tech over time is important.
Compensate and reward
Compared to 47% of Millennials, only 38% of Gen Z employees consider work-life balance important. At the same time, 65% of Gen Z consider salary to be important. It makes sense - Gen Z have grown up during a period of economic uncertainty. They’re more cautious than Millennials and care a great deal about job security. So, if you want to attract and retain Gen Z employees, make sure they’re fairly rewarded for their work and know what long-term opportunities are available to them.
Provide autonomy and control
Gen Z employees don’t appreciate being micromanaged or watched closely. They want to know that you trust them and they want ownership, autonomy, and options. In the workplace, this again comes back to dynamic spaces where employees can control their environment, including where and how they work.
Balance social and solitary space
Gen Z workers value collaboration, but they also appreciate their independence. Many prefer to work on their own and be judged on their own merits, rather than a team effort. It’s important to create physical workspaces that can adapt to both of these needs, giving your employees the chance to work as a team or break away and work on their own.
Genuinely care about sustainable practices
Going green in the workplace matters to Gen Z, but not just for the sake of branding. Sustainable practices should be genuine, so make sure you stick to your values and demonstrate your impact.
Encourage personalisation
Gone are the days of offices filled with row after row of grey cubicles. The next generation of employees want to choose the kind of space they work in, and personalise it to their needs and style, even if they don’t have a dedicated desk. Facilitate personalisation with plants, lighting, breakout spaces, and more.
Focus on wellness
Gen Z are more stressed than Millennials but are also more likely to ask for help when they need it. Acknowledge the importance of wellness and mental health in the workplace, and where possible, provide additional support for your employees.
Make it fun
Enjoying work and pursuing happiness are both top priorities for Gen Z - valued over health and wealth. So, set up your workspace for fun and enjoyment, with bright colours, good lighting, break areas, greenery, and other fun decor.
Now is the perfect time to plan for Gen Z
Workspaces are important for Gen Z - after all, they anticipate spending a good chunk of the next 4 decades working, learning, growing, and building their career. So if you want to attract and retain more Gen Z employees, provide the kind of environment they want to work in. One that’s adaptable, collaborative, individualised, high-tech, and fun to work in. Start making changes to your workplace now and you’ll position your organisation as a preferred employer for the next wave of talented graduates.
